The case against Argentinian lawyer Agostina Páez in Brazil took a decisive turn after the intervention of the Argentine Foreign Ministry, which managed to direct the process towards a less burdensome resolution and enabled her return to the country. The Brazilian criminal court ruled that the accused must carry out community tasks in Argentina and face financial compensation to the victims, thus avoiding an effective prison sentence

.

The case, which had generated strong repercussions due to the accusation of “racial insult” by the lawyer's defense of her harassment by a Brazilian citizen, initially contemplated a much more severe scenario, with a possible sentence of up to 15 years in prison. However, the requalification of the positions and the Argentine diplomatic strategy made it possible to significantly reduce the scope of the cause

The key to the change was the intervention of the Argentine Consulate in Rio de Janeiro, which presented formal guarantees to the Brazilian justice system so that Páez could continue the process from Argentina. The proposal included a commitment that the defendant will comply with judicial obligations, both in terms of community tasks and in economic compensation

.

This support was decisive for the court to accept an alternative to imprisonment, aligned with an exit that prioritizes reparation for harm over extreme punitive punishment. In this context, the penalty is translated into a combination of community service and financial compensation to victims, whose final amounts will be defined in the judicial decision

.

The episode that originated the cause dates back to January 14, when Páez staged an altercation in a bar in Ipanema after an argument over an account. A gesture recorded on video and viralized on social networks was considered discriminatory by the Brazilian justice system, which led to the opening of criminal proceedings

.

For the following weeks, the lawyer remained in Brazil under strict conditions, including a ban on leaving the country and monitoring with an electronic ankle brace. The possibility that the process would last for years triggered alerts about forced detention or even possible

Argentine diplomatic management was central to changing the course of the file. The Foreign Ministry acted without interfering with Brazil's judicial sovereignty, but providing the necessary guarantees to ensure compliance with the process from Argentine territory

.

In addition, during the hearing, the defense insisted that it was an isolated episode and not repeated behavior, while Páez herself expressed regret and apologized for what happened. These elements were also considered in the judicial evaluation.
