President Javier Milei met this Tuesday at Quinta de Olivos with the Minister of Justice, Juan Bautista Mahiques, and advanced one of the most ambitious projects of his administration: the drafting of a new Criminal Code. The initiative aims to modernize the Argentine criminal system and to tighten penalties for crimes that today generate strong social concern

.

After the meeting, Mahiques confirmed that his portfolio is already working on the preparation of a new text that will be sent to the Congress once finished. In parallel, the Government will promote a series of legislative reforms aimed at strengthening the existing criminal scheme, focusing on the safety and protection of victims

Among the main changes being sought to introduce is the incorporation of new crimes that are not adequately contemplated today or whose classification is insufficient. The minister mentioned cases such as pyramid scams, bank exits, entrances, crimes committed under the modality of a “black widow” and the actions of so-called motochorros. Migratory crimes, harm against animals, the use of weapons inside prisons and illegal stings will also be included

.

The focus of the new Criminal Code will focus on victims, in line with the Government's vision of prioritizing order and security against crime. In that sense, the Milei administration seeks to leave behind permissive legislation that for years benefited criminals to the detriment of citizens

.

The drafting of this new code does not start from scratch, although it will involve a comprehensive reformulation. The project takes as its precedent the work started during the previous administration in the Ministry of Justice, but will be revised and adapted under the guidelines of the current

administration.

On the other hand, the minister has just held his first meeting with the Supreme Court, in a meeting that also marked a gesture of institutional coordination. There, the commitment to advance the filling of judicial vacancies was ratified, with the sending of specifications to the Senate to fill more than 300 positions among judges, prosecutors

and defenders.

The Government considers that the lack of magistrates is one of the main factors affecting the functioning of the judicial system. For this reason, together with the reform of the Criminal Code, they seek to advance a comprehensive normalization of Justice
