A magnitude 7.4 earthquake shook western Colombia on Monday, causing fatalities, injuries, and severe material damage in various regions of the country. The quake had its epicenter near San José del Palmar, in the Chocó department, and was felt even outside Colombian territory.

The first official reports confirmed at least two deaths, while emergency agencies continued to work to locate trapped individuals and determine the final number of affected people. Authorities warned that the figures could change as rescue efforts progressed.

Landslides and trapped individuals

Among the most affected cities are Cali, Manizales, Pereira, and Quibdó. In Cali, numerous damaged buildings and collapsed structures were reported, some with people trapped beneath the rubble.

In Quibdó, the capital of Chocó, injuries and severe damage to buildings were reported. Authorities urged the population to remain alert for the possibility of aftershocks.
