The President of the United States, Donald Trump, publicly congratulated Abelardo de la Espriella for his victory in the presidential elections in Colombia and highlighted the support he provided during the campaign. The message came just hours after the preliminary results were announced, declaring the conservative candidate the winner against leftist senator Iván Cepeda.

Through his social media, Trump stated that it was a “great honor” to support De la Espriella and celebrated the arrival of a leader with whom he shares positions on issues such as security, the fight against drug trafficking, economic growth, and strengthening bilateral relations. The U.S. president had previously expressed his support for the then Colombian candidate several times during the electoral campaign.

The congratulation represents one of the first significant international recognitions for the elected Colombian president and confirms the close political alignment that both leaders built over the past months. Trump had previously described De la Espriella as a “smart, strong, and tenacious” leader and stated that his eventual arrival at the presidency would be positive for Colombia.

During the campaign, the now-elected president thanked Washington for its support on several occasions and promised to strengthen cooperation with the United States in matters of security, trade, and the fight against drug trafficking. He even pointed out that a strategic alliance with the Trump administration would allow for the recovery of the bilateral relationship after years of diplomatic tensions.

De la Espriella's victory marks an important political shift for Colombia after the government of Gustavo Petro. With nearly 13 million votes and one of the most closely contested elections in the recent history of the country, the conservative leader will assume the presidency on August 7 with the promise of promoting an agenda focused on security, reducing the size of the state, and economic growth.

In addition to Trump, other right-wing leaders in the region celebrated the electoral outcome. De la Espriella's victory could bring Colombia closer to governments like those of the United States, Argentina, and Ecuador, shaping a new regional political map.

While some challenges presented by leftist sectors continue, Trump's congratulation reinforces the perception that the international community is beginning to recognize the elected president's victory and is preparing for a new stage in the relationship between Bogotá and Washington.
