Just over a week before the start of the 2026 World Cup, the Austrian National Team received one of the worst possible news. Christoph Baumgartner, one of the most important pieces of Ralf Rangnick's team, has been ruled out for the World Cup after suffering a muscle injury in his right thigh during warm-up before the friendly against Tunisia.

The confirmation came this Tuesday after the player underwent medical tests. The MRI revealed a more serious injury than expected, prompting the coaching staff to remove him from the World Cup roster. Until the last hours, there was hope that he could miss only the debut and rejoin later, but that possibility has been ruled out.

The Austrian Federation officially announced the news through a statement on its social media. "Christoph Baumgartner will miss the national team in the World Cup. This is confirmed after today's MRI. The 26-year-old suffered an injury to the muscles of his right thigh", reported the organization, which also sent a message of support to the 26-year-old player.

The absence represents a significant blow for Austria. Baumgartner arrived at the tournament experiencing one of the best moments of his career: in the last season with Red Bull Leipzig, he accumulated 17 goals and 9 assists in 37 matches, establishing himself as an offensive reference both at his club and in the national team.

In addition to his contributions in attack, the attacking midfielder was a fundamental piece in the high-pressing system that characterizes Rangnick's teams. His ability to connect, arrive in the box from the second line, and lead ball recovery had made him one of the most decisive players in the European squad.

"This is very hard news for Christoph and for us as a team. He is a key player and a very important figure within the squad", acknowledged Rangnick after the diagnosis was revealed. The coach also assured that the entire group will support the player during his recovery.

The concern in Austria did not end there. During the 1-0 victory against Tunisia, David Alaba also raised alarms as he left the match due to muscle discomfort. However, subsequent tests ruled out a serious injury and the defender will arrive without issues for the World Cup.

David Alaba also feels a muscle discomfort, but a serious injury has been ruled out.

The friendly against the Africans was the last match before the World Cup, as the match scheduled against Guatemala on June 10 at Rose Bowl Stadium in California was canceled by FIFA. Once in the tournament, Austria will open its World Cup participation on June 17 against Jordan at the Levi's Stadium in San Francisco. Then they will face Argentina on the 22nd at AT&T Stadium in Arlington and close the group stage against Algeria on the 27th at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City.
