Boca is going through a reconfiguration of the squad while trying to shape the team that will face the second half of the season. After qualifying for the quarter-finals of the Copa Sudamericana, the management and the coaching staff led by Rodolfo Arruabarrena continue to define which players will stay and who will need to seek new destinations to gain minutes.
In this context, two players who have lost ground in the coach's consideration are likely to leave the club: Marcelo Weigandt and Juan Barinaga. The former would continue his career in Ecuador, while the latter is on track to join Racing.
On one hand, Chelo would be loaned for one season to Liga de Quito, a team managed by Argentine Gustavo Álvarez. The agreement would include a purchase option that would be activated if the defender meets a certain number of matches during his stay in Ecuador.
Chelo Weigant would go on loan to Liga de Quito
The player who came up through the youth ranks ofBoca had returned to the club at the beginning of 2026 after his stint at Inter Miami, where he was a champion of the MLS alongside Lionel Messi and Rodrigo De Paul. During the first half of the year, he had various opportunities but ended up losing ground, and with Arruabarrena's arrival, he was informed that he would not be considered for the remainder of the year.
In total, Weigandt played just 16 matches since his return to Xeneize, without scoring any goals. He is now looking to regain continuity with Los Albos and open a new opportunity to continue his career outside the club where he was formed.
On the other hand, Barinaga's case is different because his next destination would be in Argentine football. The 25-year-old defender would join Racing on loan for one year, without a fee and with a purchase option, although the operation would depend on Gastón Martirena being transferred to Santos in Brazil.
The Uruguayan's departure still needs to overcome an issue: the Brazilian club has a ban on signing players imposed by FIFA due to an outstanding debt with Monaco for the transfer of Jean Lucas. Until Santos resolves that situation, Martirena's arrival in Avellaneda cannot be finalized, and consequently, neither can Colo's arrival.
Barinaga never managed to establish himself at Boca
The full-back joined the club from the Ribera in mid-2024 from Belgrano for 3 million dollars. Since then, he has not managed to establish himself definitively in the team. Injuries and some poor performances have caused him to lose ground, and like Weigandt, he was informed at the beginning of Arruabarrena's tenure that he needed to seek a new destination.
These two operations are part of the purification process that Boca is undergoing during a transfer market that will remain open for Argentine clubs until September 2.
The numbers of Barinaga and Weigandt at Boca
Since his arrival at Xeneize in mid-2024, the Rosario native has played 3,121 minutes, spread over 42 matches, in which he did not score any goals, provided 3 assists, and received 7 yellow cards.
Meanwhile, in his three stints with the blue and gold jersey, Chelo played 6,571 minutes in 88 matches, where he scored 3 goals, contributed 7 assists, and was booked 13 times and sent offonce. In terms of titles, he won 5: Superliga 2019/20, Copa Argentina 2019/20, Copa de la Liga 2022, Liga Profesional 2022, and Supercopa Argentina 2022.
