The far-left became the most voted force in Berlin with 24.5% of the votes in the elections held today, according to a survey released by German public television.
The result represents a strong increase for the party, which doubled its support compared to the 2023 elections and managed to surpass the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), which had been governing the city-state in coalition with the German Social Democratic Party (SPD).
The electoral result in Berlin marked a advance of the far-left in the German capital. Behind the formation was the CDU, while the right-wing party Alternative for Germany (AfD) reached third place with 16% and the Greens came in fourth with 15%.
The SPD, which had been part of the Berlin government along with the CDU, suffered a significant drop and positioned itself as the fifth political force, with 12% of the votes. Compared to 2023, the social democrats lost 6.4 percentage points.
The CDU also recorded a significant setback. The formation lost 8.2 percentage points compared to the previous elections. The Greens, for their part, ceded 3.4 points, while AfD increased its support by 6.9 points.
