The International Monetary Fund (IMF) highlighted the strong decline in poverty in Argentina, which is below 30%, thanks to the successful economic program of the government of Javier Milei.

The statement was made by the organization's spokesperson, Julie Kozack, during a press conference, where she also confirmed that the Board will address the second review of the current program with the country next week.

In this context, Kozack noted that, following the technical agreement reached in mid-April, the Board's discussion will allow for a new disbursement.

“As you know, the technical staff of the IMF and the country's authorities reached an agreement in mid-April, and a Board meeting will be held next week on this matter. After approval, a disbursement of USD 1 billion will occur,” she stated.

Support for Milei's Government

The official took the opportunity to support the progress of the economic program and emphasize the results achieved.

“The stabilization plan of the authorities continues to produce significant results,” she asserted, while highlighting that the understandings with the technical staff focused on maintaining stability and growth.

“The understandings regarding the technical staff agreement concentrated on ensuring that policies are balanced and that disinflation, external stability, and growth persist. These are the objectives for Argentina,” she explained.

On the social front, the most relevant data highlighted by the organization was the evolution of poverty. “Argentina also experienced a significant reduction in poverty rates,” Kozack stated, specifying: “They are now below thirty percent, the lowest point in seven years.”

The organization's support also included references to the accumulation of reserves and external solidity. In a previous statement, the Fund noted that “the central bank's foreign currency purchases exceeded USD 5.5 billion so far this year,” which contributed to improving the country's ability to face potential shocks. In this regard, it emphasized that Argentina managed to maintain its performance even in a difficult international context.

Regarding the fiscal front, the spokesperson reiterated the IMF's support for the Government's strategy. “The authorities demonstrated a full commitment to a zero balance fiscal anchor,” she assured, adding: “As we said before, this is something we see as key to reinforcing the decline in inflation and restoring confidence and macroeconomic stability in Argentina.”

In this way, the international organization once again expressed its support for the economic program of Milei's Government, highlighting both macroeconomic advances and improvements in key social indicators such as poverty.
