The Azerbaijan Grand Prix of Formula 1 had a decisive moment after the accident involving Alex Albon, which forced the race to be neutralized for several laps with the Safety Car.
When the race resumed to normal speed, Franco Colapinto tried to take advantage of the restart to gain positions. The Argentine arrived under pressure to a braking point intending to make an overtaking maneuver, but found dirt on the asphalt of the Baku street circuit.
The Alpine driver locked up his brakes and was unable to control the car, which skidded and ended up involved in a multiple incident. One of the main affected was his own teammate, Pierre Gasly.
Colapinto and Gasly were out of the race
The impact caused both Alpine drivers to retire. Lando Norris was also out of the competition as a result of the incident.
At the time of the accident, Gasly was in seventh place, while Colapinto was running tenth. For that reason, the French team had a concrete opportunity to score a good amount of points in Baku.
However, the accident completely changed the landscape. Alpine went from having both of its cars in the top ten to finishing the Grand Prix without any points and with both cars damaged.
A maneuver that ended in a heavy blow for Alpine
Colapinto sought an aggressive maneuver to try to advance several positions in one action. The urban circuit of Baku, however, did not forgive the mistake in an area with dirty asphalt.
The brake lock prevented the Argentine from correcting the trajectory of his Alpine and ended up causing contact with Gasly, a situation particularly detrimental for the team because it left both drivers out of the competition.
