Gemini Live is working on a new operating mode that would allow the microphone to be activated only while the user holds down a button. The feature aims to provide greater control over the voice interaction with the artificial intelligence of Google.
The novelty was detected in a development version of the Google app for Android and, for now, is part of an APK in testing phase, so it has not been officially announced yet.

How the new push-to-talk mode of Gemini Live will work
The new mode of Gemini Live would replace continuous listening with a "push-to-talk" system, similar to the operation of a walkie-talkie.
Instead of keeping the microphone active throughout the conversation, the assistant would only listen while the user holds down the microphone button. Once released, it would stop capturing audio.
What changes will the Gemini Live interface have
According to the analysis of version 17.38.5.sa.arm64 of the Google app for Android, the mode will incorporate a revamped interface.

The mute button would disappear and be replaced by a central push-to-talk button. Additionally, an informational window will appear to explain how the new mode works.
