The future of Germán Pezzella began to clear up after weeks of uncertainty. The center-back, who had been sidelined from River's professional squad, reached an agreement with the institution to mutually terminate his contract.
Although during that period there were rumors suggesting that the defender was considering retirement, Pezzella ultimately chose to continue playing. His next destination would be Peñarol, one of the most important clubs in Uruguay and South America.
The agreement between both parties is on track and the contract would be valid until December 2027. In this way, the player would have the opportunity to regain prominence and remain competitive after an unexpected end to his second stint with the Núñez team.
The defender had been sidelined at River
Pezzella's situation at River began to complicate during the start of the semester. The defender started training with the group of players who were not in Eduardo Coudet's plans and carried out his work at the Cantilo Training Ground while waiting to resolve his future.

In the midst of that situation, it was even reported that members of River's squad had requested the management to allow the defender to return to training with the professional group.
Although it was never publicly confirmed who made that request, there were reports pointing to locker room leaders and several players who shared different moments with Pezzella in the Argentine National Team.
The management, however, maintained its position and rejected the possibility of reintegrating him into the squad. Faced with this scenario, the player ended up agreeing to terminate his contract.
Upon saying goodbye to River, Pezzella posted a brief message on his social media that reflected the bond he maintains with the institution: “Until the end of our lives, I love you. Thank you.”
A new challenge for the world champion
With his departure from River now finalized, Pezzella found in Peñarol an alternative to prolong his career. The defender will seek to feel important again within a team that has competitive objectives both locally and internationally.
