Mauricio Pochettino will continue to lead the United States national team until the 2030 World Cup. The U.S. Soccer Federation confirmed on Monday the renewal of the Argentine coach for four more years and announced a long-term project that not only includes the senior national team but also the comprehensive development of American soccer.

The new agreement significantly expands the responsibilities of the former coach of Tottenham, Paris Saint-Germain, and Chelsea, among others. In addition to leading the national team during the upcoming World Cup cycle, he will advise the federation on planning for youth teams, coach training, coordination with professional leagues, and other strategic areas of the sport.

Pochettino's continuity will be supported by a significant private investment. According to U.S. Soccer, the project includes a "substantial philanthropic donation" from Kenneth C. Griffin, founder and CEO of the Citadel investment fund and Griffin Catalyst. Other contributors will include Scott Goodwin, Adam Freede, and various business partners.

For his part, the Argentine valued the opportunity to continue leading the project and explained that his goal transcends sports results. "Working alongside U.S. Soccer for the past two years, it became clear to us that there is enormous potential to further strengthen the men's national team program," he stated.

He also highlighted the support received during the last World Cup. "The passion we felt from the fans during the World Cup reinforced our conviction about everything that can be achieved here. We want to leave a lasting impact on the sport in the country that welcomed us so warmly and for that legacy to go beyond the results on the field," he added.

Meanwhile, the executive director and secretary general of the federation, Justin Tate Batson, stated that the renewal aims to consolidate the growth of soccer in the United States. "Mauricio and his coaching staff believe in the future of soccer in the United States. We have a lot of work ahead of us to fulfill our ambitions, including competing to win World Cups and making soccer the most played sport in all communities," he noted.

Since his arrival in September 2024, Pochettino has led a process that had its first major challenge with the 2026 World Cup. Under his leadership, the United States achieved one of the best campaigns in its history by winning its group for the third time, securing its first victory in a knockout stage since Korea-Japan 2002, and setting a record for wins in a single World Cup.

With the renewal secured, the Argentine coach now faces a new cycle that will include the CONCACAF Nations Leagues 2026/2027 and 2028/29, the Gold Cups 2027 and 2029, and the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games, before tackling the qualifiers for the 2030 World Cup, in a project aimed at transforming the structure of American soccer in the long term.

Pochettino's numbers in the United States

Since his arrival on the North American bench after the 2024 Copa América, the Argentine coach has directed 31 matches, with a record of 18 wins, 1 draw, and 12 losses, with a balance of 61 goals scored and 12 against. Although he did not win titles, he reached far in two tournaments: CONCACAF Nations League 2024/25 (4th) and Gold Cup 2025 (2nd).
