Israel warns of the rise of antisemitism and points to anti-Israel rhetoric

The Israeli Foreign Minister, Gideon Sa’ar, welcomed representatives from major Jewish communities and organizations around the world in Jerusalem to address one of the diaspora's greatest concerns: the growth of antisemitism globally.

The meeting took place within the framework of the third J50 Forum, an initiative created by Sa’ar to bring together leaders of Jewish communities and international organizations with the aim of strengthening coordination in the face of the challenges facing the Jewish population worldwide.

Israel warns about the rise of antisemitism

During the meeting, Sa’ar pointed out that there is an increasing concern over the rise in attacks against Jewish communities and stated that there is a connection between this phenomenon and the anti-Israel rhetoric persistently promoted by some governments.

The Israeli chancellor raised the issue that the systematic demonization of the State of Israel could end up being transferred to Jewish communities living outside the country. In this way, a political or diplomatic dispute can turn into hostility against individuals who bear no responsibility for the decisions made by the Israeli government.

The warning comes in a particularly delicate international context, marked by a significant increase in tensions around Israel and numerous episodes of antisemitism recorded in various countries.

The J50 Forum expanded its representation this year and once again brought together leaders of Jewish organizations from different countries. The initiative is chaired by William Daroff, CEO of the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations.

Also participating is Jonathan Greenblatt, CEO of the Anti-Defamation League, who emphasized the importance of diaspora leaders being able to meet to exchange experiences and strengthen the relationship between Israel and Jewish communities.

The goal is to generate a coordinated response to antisemitism and reinforce the ties between the State of Israel and the communities living outside its borders.

Concern over the normalization of hate

One of the main risks highlighted by authorities and Jewish organizations is that antisemitism could end up being normalized in public discourse.

Criticism of a government's decisions is part of democratic debate, but the problem arises when such criticism turns into attacks against Jews as a collective, uses antisemitic stereotypes, or portrays Jewish communities in other countries as responsible for the actions of the State of Israel.

For Sa’ar, combating this dynamic requires greater international coordination and a firm response to speeches that could lead to violence or discrimination.

Israel seeks to strengthen its diplomatic ties

During the meeting, the chancellor also highlighted the expansion of Israeli diplomatic activity. He explained that the number of foreign embassies in Jerusalem has doubled, while Israel opened five new embassies in other countries and strengthened its diplomatic relations internationally.

Sa’ar concluded the meeting by emphasizing the importance of unity between Israel and the Jewish diaspora. The meeting in Jerusalem, he stated, helps to reinforce a bond considered strategic for jointly facing the advance of antisemitism.

In a scenario where attacks against Jews are generating increasing concern in various parts of the world, coordination between Israel and international Jewish communities presents itself as a central tool to combat hate and prevent political hostility towards Israel from transforming into discrimination against Jews.
