The City of Buenos Aires is advancing with its public space management policy and has already eliminated 471 parking spaces reserved for people with disabilities that were being used improperly. This measure is part of the plan promoted by the head of Government, Jorge Macri, to combat undue privileges and ensure that benefits intended for those who truly need them are not used fraudulently.

One of the most striking cases was recorded in Palermo, where authorities detected four fake parking spaces on the same block, on 3 de Febrero Street at 1100, between Federico Lacroze and Teodoro García Avenues. In total, that neighborhood accounted for 44 of the illegal reservations removed.

Detected fake, expired permits, and even those of deceased individuals

According to the city government, the removed spaces corresponded to forged, expired permits or those whose holders had already passed away.

Previously, Jorge Macri's administration had granted a 20-day period for holders to regularize their situation through the Distance Procedures system (TAD). At the end of that period, the operation to remove all irregular signage began.

Currently, the City has around 4,000 reserved spaces for people with disabilities, so the official goal is to ensure that these spaces are available exclusively for those who meet the legal requirements.

Jorge Macri: "The free-for-all is over"

The head of Government celebrated the progress of the operation and emphasized that the City will continue to tighten controls.

"Incredible. Four fake parking spaces on the same block. There are already 44 in Palermo and 471 throughout the City. The free-for-all is over. Law and order," expressed Jorge Macri.

From the city executive, it was emphasized that the illegal occupation of these spaces not only constitutes an undue appropriation of public space but also directly harms people with disabilities who need those places for their daily mobility.

Stricter penalties for those who alter signage

As part of the new control scheme, the Traffic Secretariat implemented an immediate action protocol for cases where irregularities are detected.

Among the measures planned are:

  • Immediate removal of irregular signage.

  • Report to the Public Prosecutor's Office when there is forgery or alteration.

  • Preventive suspension of the offender's driver's license.

  • Collection of all costs derived from the removal and repair operation of the public space.

Additionally, the City imposes fines of up to $200,000 for displaying false or nonexistent disability certificates or credentials and up to $100,000 for installing or modifying traffic signage without authorization.

The City seeks to incorporate new criminal penalties

The city government also sent a bill to the Legislature to amend the Contraventional Code and incorporate as a specific contravention the forgery or alteration of parking signs for people with disabilities.

With these measures, Jorge Macri's administration seeks to strengthen compliance with the regulations, ensure accessibility for those who truly need it, and advance with a policy of law and order regarding the use of public space in the City of Buenos Aires.
