Pope Leo XIV held a meeting with the President of France, Emmanuel Macron, in Paris, during which he delivered a strong message about the role of authorities in relation to the Church and Catholic citizens.

The Pontiff stated that “a president who claims to be uninterested in the Church and Catholics would be failing in his duty”, a definition that focused on the responsibility of political leaders towards those who profess the Catholic faith.

Leo XIV's message to Emmanuel Macron

The Pope's statement was directed specifically at Macron and suggested that a president cannot consider the reality of the Church and Catholics as irrelevant to the society he governs.

Leo XIV emphasized in this way that authorities must take into account all sectors of the population, including those with a particular religious affiliation.

The message takes on particular relevance in France, where secularism is one of the central principles of the organization of the State and there is a historical debate about the place religion should occupy in public life.

In this context, the Pope brought to the forefront the relationship between political institutions, the Church, and the Catholic community, and pointed out that a president's indifference towards these sectors would represent a failure regarding his responsibilities.

The meeting between the Pope and the French president

Leo XIV's definition came during his visit to Paris, where he held meetings with French authorities as part of his agenda.

The meeting with Macron allowed for the discussion of various aspects of the relationship between the Church and France, a bond marked by a long history and by the particular French conception of the separation between religious institutions and the State.

For the Pontiff, however, the condition of president implies a responsibility that also extends to Catholic citizens and the Church, regardless of the personal convictions of the leader.

The statement directed at Macron also fits into one of the issues that Leo XIV has been raising since the beginning of his papacy: the need for the religious dimension to have a place within social debate, especially when it comes to defending the freedom of believers.

A defense of the place of Catholics

With his message, Leo XIV made it clear that the presence of Catholics in society cannot be ignored by those in public responsibilities.

The statement directed at Macron thus emphasized the duty of governments to represent all citizens and to maintain a dialogue with religious institutions.

The Pope highlighted that a president who neglects the Church and Catholics would be failing part of his duty, a definition that garnered special attention as it was pronounced during his meeting with the French leader in Paris.
