The elimination of Uruguay in the first phase of the 2026 World Cup left a disastrous image, even for Marcelo Bielsa's style. After the 1-0 defeat against Spain, a result that sealed the farewell of La Celeste with just two points in the group, the Argentine coach appeared unhinged, out of control, and had an awkward moment during the post-match interviews.
While waiting for the interview to start, Bielsa lost his temper and shouted at the journalists present: "Get on with it already!". There was reflected the confrontational feeling that accompanied him throughout his appearance before the media.
Beyond the psychotic outburst in front of everyone, the coach made a brief self-criticism and acknowledged that he did not manage to get his team to reach the expected level during the tournament.
"I couldn't enhance the power of Uruguay," he stated. He then added that, "I wanted Uruguay to have more presence in attack and I didn't achieve that," referring to a World Cup in which his team scored only three goals and never managed to show a performance in line with the rivals they faced.
Another controversial topic was when he decided to take out goalkeeper Fernando Muslera at halftime, after he let the ball slip in the goal that ultimately gave Spain the victory. However, Bielsa avoided elaborating on the decision.
When asked if he spoke with the Estudiantes de La Plata goalkeeper during the break, he curtly replied "nothing." Later, in another interview, he was again questioned about the substitution and responded uncomfortably: "He decided to leave." When pressed on the topic, he ended the conversation irritated: "I've already answered that."
