Milei spoke with The Economist and anticipated a second wave of reforms: “The next package will be much deeper”

President Javier Milei gave an extensive interview to The Economist at the Casa Rosada, where he reaffirmed the economic direction of his Government and anticipated that, if he secures reelection in 2027, he will advance with an even deeper package of reforms than those applied during his first term.

“There is much more spending to cut and many more taxes to lower,” said the president, who assured that he will unleash a new phase of reforms if he obtains a second mandate. According to Milei, the transformations made so far surpass “everything that has been done in the last 100 years in Argentina combined” and the next package will be even more ambitious.

During the interview, the President highlighted as the main results of his administration the reduction of inflation, fiscal balance, and deregulation of the economy. The Economist acknowledged that the Government managed to lower the inflation from levels close to 13% monthly before he took office to around 2%, in addition to achieving fiscal surpluses and significantly reducing poverty.

Milei also emphasized the elimination of regulations and stated that his administration has already eliminated about 17,000 regulations, in addition to advancing with labor reform. In international matters, he highlighted the relationship with the United States and also the trade relationship with China, a country he currently defined as a partner with whom it is “very pleasant” to work.

Another central theme was artificial intelligence. The head of state stated that Argentina will seek to adopt this technology more aggressively than other countries and claimed it could help the country become, within two decades, “a world power like the United States.”

Looking ahead to 2027, Milei asserted that no scenario could lead him to modify his program for electoral reasons. “I will not stop doing what is right just for an electoral outcome,” he stated. He added that if Argentines decide to turn their backs on the model despite him maintaining his convictions, it will be a decision of society.

The interview also reviewed the opposition landscape presented by Kirchnerism. The Economist placed the Buenos Aires governor Axel Kicillof among the possible competitors for 2027, although it noted that his image is deteriorated and recalled his identification with an economic Keynesianism that generates fear in the markets.

Thus, far from suggesting a shift towards an electoral or populist agenda, Milei made it clear that he aims to deepen reforms, further reduce the weight of the State, and advance with new deregulations.
