President Javier Milei referred to the statements made by Donald Trump regarding the Falkland Islands, one of the central topics of the Cabinet meeting held this Tuesday.

The U.S. president had expressed his willingness to review the historical position of the United States regarding the sovereignty of the islands, in a proposal that generated expectations around the Argentine claim.

In a phone conversation with journalist Luis Gasulla on radio El Observador, Milei confirmed that the Falklands issue would be present at the ministerial meeting.

The contact had begun from a conversation about Lionel Messi's retirement from the Argentine National Team, but it turned into one of the issues that the President considers central for the country.

“Yesterday something very strong happened regarding the most important and sacred cause we have as Argentines,” said Milei referring to Trump's statements.

The Argentine president did not elaborate at that moment on the concrete implications of the U.S. proposal, although he confirmed that the topic would be part of the Cabinet meeting agenda.

After the meeting, it was announced that President Milei would publicly address the issue through a national broadcast on Thursday night, where he would provide more details on the matter.

Milei's statements came after Trump was asked yesterday in the Oval Office about his government's position regarding the South Atlantic archipelago.

“I always review every position. It's just one of many,” Trump replied when asked if he was considering changing the U.S. stance.

Washington has historically maintained a position of neutrality regarding the sovereignty dispute since the 1982 war, not officially siding with Argentina or the United Kingdom. In this context, Trump's words represent a significant event for the Falklands cause.

During the conversation, Gasulla also mentioned the Falklands issue among the possible news of the year, along with Formula 1 and a potential visit from the Pope to Argentina.

On another note, Milei had anticipated that the Cabinet meeting would be triggered by an article prepared by Minister Federico Sturzenegger. According to the President, the official presents a series of variables aimed at questioning claims made by certain journalists and media outlets.

In this regard, Milei stated that Sturzenegger's work “demonstrates with seven very strong variables, one by one, each of the lies that certain journalists and media outlets propagate who do not want Argentina to do well.”

After that analysis, the President indicated that the ministers would proceed with the usual review of the policies and actions corresponding to each portfolio.

The Falklands issue, however, had a prominent place on the agenda, both due to Trump's statements and the government's decision for Milei to speak on the sovereignty claim in a national broadcast.
