The phrase from Ponzio that sounds curious today after taking over as interim coach of River

Leonardo Ponzio unexpectedly took over as interim coach of River Plate following Eduardo Coudet's resignation. The former club captain, 44 years old and originally from Rosario, was serving as a link between the First Team and the Reserve, in addition to being part of the Technical Secretariat. His arrival on the bench came just four months after a statement that now seems striking.

In April of this year, El León had been clear about his future plans. At that time he stated, "I rule out being a coach because I currently don't see myself in the day-to-day." Those words contrast with the current reality, where he holds the coaching position with Marcelo Escudero as his assistant.

The management's idea is for Ponzio to remain in charge of the team at least until December. Within the Millonario, they also do not rule out the possibility of offering him a contract until 2027 if the results support this transition period. With no previous experience in the role, the former player is preparing for his absolute debut this Sunday against Banfield at the Estadio Florencio Sola, where both fan bases will be present.

President Stéfano Di Carlo backed the decision and highlighted the new interim's qualifications. "We believe he has all the skills and has prepared himself during this time to manage this transition situation," the official expressed.

A reference from the Gallardo era

Ponzio is one of the most important symbols of Marcelo Gallardo's era. With El Muñeco, he played 205 matches and totaled 358 appearances wearing the River jersey. Throughout his career at the club, he won 18 titles, including the Copa Libertadores in 2015 and 2018. In the latter, he lifted the trophy as captain.

His trajectory within the institution and knowledge of the current squad were key factors for management to choose him at this moment of change. El León knows several of the players closely and understands the club's dynamics from the inside.

If the plan does not work as expected, River already has names on file for the future. Among the options is Hernán Crespo, who just arrived at Atlas in Mexico. The historic forward has a clause in favor of the Núñez club, although it only activates in January. Other candidates include Pablo Aimar, Gabriel Milito, and Diego Cocca.

For now, the focus is on Ponzio's debut against Banfield. The former player must demonstrate on the field whether he can successfully manage this transition period and if, despite that April statement, the bench can become his new home.
