Leonardo Ponzio unexpectedly took over as interim coach of River Plate following Eduardo Coudet's resignation. The former club captain, 44 years old and originally from Rosario, was serving as a link between the First Team and the Reserve, in addition to being part of the Technical Secretariat. His arrival on the bench came just four months after a statement that now seems striking.
In April of this year, El León had been clear about his future plans. At that time he stated, "I rule out being a coach because I currently don't see myself in the day-to-day." Those words contrast with the current reality, where he holds the coaching position with Marcelo Escudero as his assistant.
The management's idea is for Ponzio to remain in charge of the team at least until December. Within the Millonario, they also do not rule out the possibility of offering him a contract until 2027 if the results support this transition period. With no previous experience in the role, the former player is preparing for his absolute debut this Sunday against Banfield at the Estadio Florencio Sola, where both fan bases will be present.
President Stéfano Di Carlo backed the decision and highlighted the new interim's qualifications. "We believe he has all the skills and has prepared himself during this time to manage this transition situation," the official expressed.
