Archaeologists discovered an altar with traces of combustion and a decorated ossuary at the site of Odirmon, occupied between the 3rd century BC and the 3rd century AD

A team of archaeologists discovered an altar and an ossuary in southern Uzbekistan that may be linked to Zoroastrian practices. The finding occurred at the site of the ancient city of Odirmon, near Samarkand, during excavations led by Sanjar Abduraximov from the Samarkand Archaeological Institute and the Uzbekistan Cultural Heritage Agency.

Odirmon features defensive walls, roads, and a rectangular citadel. According to researchers, the site was occupied from the 3rd century BC to the 3rd century AD. The altar and ossuary have not yet been precisely dated, so their exact chronological relationship remains open.

The altar was found in a room with a brick floor, alongside clear evidence of combustion. The walls of this space were coated with clay plaster that had been reapplied several times. These successive repairs indicate that the room was used over a prolonged period.

The conservators working on cleaning the ossuary have so far identified images of a deer and a juniper on its surface. The restoration process is expected to reveal more motifs as it progresses.

A possible link to fire worship

It is still unclear how the altar and ossuary were used, or if they functioned contemporaneously. However, specialists note that the traces of fire around the altar could relate it to Zoroastrian practices, an ancient religion where fire held a central place in rituals.

Zoroastrianism spread across large areas of Central Asia and Persia at various times. In this context, any structure associated with ritual combustion becomes particularly interesting to researchers. In Odirmon, the combination of a repeatedly used space, the brick floor, and the burn marks provides a concrete, albeit still provisional, indication.

Abduraximov and his team emphasize that more analysis is needed to confirm the function of the altar and its potential connection to Zoroastrian rites. For now, the discovery adds a new element to the understanding of religious practices in the region during the centuries before and after the turn of the era.

The city of Odirmon, with its network of roads and citadel, reflects a stable and organized occupation. The finding of the altar and ossuary adds to this image of a settlement with a complex religious and funerary life, the details of which remain under study.

Restoration and next steps

The cleaning work on the ossuary continues. Each new image that appears on its surface may provide data about the beliefs or symbolism of those who used it. Meanwhile, researchers remain cautious: they do not definitively claim that it is a Zoroastrian altar, but point to that possibility based on the evidence of fire.

The research is part of the efforts by Uzbek authorities to document and protect the country's archaeological heritage. The site of Odirmon, due to its occupational sequence and defensive structures, was already significant. The finding of the altar and ossuary reinforces its importance and opens new lines of work for specialists.

In the coming months, progress is expected in dating the materials and in the detailed analysis of the burn marks. This data will allow for a more solid evaluation of whether the space functioned as a place of fire worship and what its connection, if any, was to the ossuary found in the same context.
