After the victory of the Argentine National Team against England in the semifinal of the 2026 World Cup, the players staged a scene of strong symbolic content by posing with a flag that stated “The Malvinas are Argentine”.

This historic gesture generated an immediate global reaction, including from the United Kingdom, which labeled the action as “totally inappropriate” and demanded that FIFA open an investigation and impose sanctions against Argentina.

In this context, from the Kirchnerism, false versions began to circulate claiming that the government of Javier Milei, through Foreign Minister Pablo Quirno, had apologized to British authorities for the display of the flag.

However, these claims were obviously false and even denied by Quirno himself, who not only denied any kind of retraction but also explicitly supported the attitude of the footballers.

Far from the rumors spread, Quirno maintained that the players' expression was aligned with a historical position of Argentina.

He indicated that the flag “did not say anything other than a truth” and represented a strong message that amplified the national claim on the international stage, acting as a “much larger megaphone” to make the cause visible.

The Foreign Minister also emphasized that the issue of the Malvinas transcends internal political differences and constitutes a central axis of Argentine foreign policy.

In this regard, he stressed that it is a topic that “crosses all” sectors and that the government maintains an active strategy in various diplomatic arenas to uphold the sovereignty claim.

“We are constantly working on different avenues, mainly on the diplomatic front, presenting ourselves in different forums where we keep the claim alive and keeping the claim alive is already a topic,” the official stated, detailing the work being carried out internationally.

In the same vein, Quirno highlighted the importance of continuing to strengthen Argentina's presence in the world as a key tool to enhance the claim.

“Continuing to celebrate that the claim remains alive, we have tools and Argentina is positioning itself in the world in such a way that its claim can gain more traction than it has had,” he added.

Thus, the Milei government rejected the false versions spread by Kirchnerism and reaffirmed its clear stance in defense of the Malvinas.
