The Manchester City dressing room was exposed in one of the strongest scenes revealed by A Beautiful Obsession. The documentary showed the confrontation between Pep Guardiola and Kyle Walker after the 2-0 defeat against Liverpool at Anfield in December 2024.
The discussion began when the coach questioned the defender about a defensive mistake that had influenced the course of the match. Walker, who at the time was one of the team's leaders, publicly responded in front of his teammates and raised the tension.
The intense exchange between Guardiola and Kyle Walker
The English full-back questioned why Guardiola constantly pointed him out during team meetings.
“You keep saying my name in every meeting and in every damn thing. In every damn meeting, it’s my name,” Walker reproached the Catalan coach.
Guardiola tried to explain that his role as captain meant that the demands on him were greater. “Maybe because you are a captain,” the coach replied.
The explanation, however, did not satisfy the player. Walker recalled that Guardiola himself did not want him to take on that leadership within the dressing room and questioned why he was being held responsible for an action that, in his view, did not justify the constant reference to his name.
“You didn’t want me to be a captain. I reacted to someone else, I lost the ball, and somehow you bring my name into that,” the defender expressed.
Guardiola broke down in front of the entire squad
The discussion had an unexpected outcome. Amid the tension, Guardiola began to cry in front of his players, visibly affected by the moment the team was going through.
The coach took part of the responsibility for the situation and even left open the possibility of leaving if he felt that his presence was harming the group.
“This is my defeat. If I am a problem, you have to tell me. I won’t stay here for the money or just to stay, I don’t want to feel like I have to run away from you. If I am a problem, tell me,” he stated.
