The River delegation will travel on June 21 to Alicante, Spain, where they will carry out most of the preparation. The squad will stay at the La Finca Resort and will remain there until July 5, with a brief trip to Portugal to play the match against the carioca team.
The management prioritized organizing international friendly matches during their stay in the Old Continent. Among the alternatives analyzed was América de México, although negotiations did not progress due to logistical issues. Finally, the chosen rival was the current champion of America, who will also conduct their preseason in the Iberian Peninsula.
The match, the first between the two since the 2019 Copa Libertadores final, will have a special appeal as it involves two of the most important teams in South America and will serve as a benchmark to evaluate the footballing level of both squads ahead of the second part of the season.
River has not played against Flamengo since the 2019 Copa Libertadores final
While waiting, River started training in Ezeiza with a reduced group. The focus is on both the new signings that may arrive during the transfer market and the situation of several players who have left the club or still need to resolve their future. Additionally, the coaching staff is awaiting the arrival of some players who are currently competing in the World Cup and could join directly during their stay in Europe or once the squad returns to Argentina.
For now, the friendly against Flamengo is the only confirmed match for the European tour, although the management continues to work to finalize a second commitment that will allow them to complete the planning designed for the preseason.
