Rockstar Games surprised players with news that many have been asking for a long time: free updates for Grand Theft Auto V. Starting June 18, those who have the game on PS4 or the digital version on Xbox One will be able to upgrade to the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S versions at no cost.

This enhanced version, which was released in March 2022, brings significant graphical improvements and smoother performance. For example, it allows players to switch between the three protagonists much faster, which is appreciated in such a dynamic game. Additionally, saved data and all progress in GTA Online can be transferred without any issues.

PC players are not left out either. Those with an older version will be able to upgrade for free to the Enhanced Edition, which arrived last year. This edition includes the same improvements as on next-gen consoles but adds exclusive features for PC such as ambient occlusion with ray tracing and global illumination.

Improvements that are noticeable in the game

These free updates come at a time when more and more people have next-gen consoles or more powerful PCs. Four years after the initial launch of the current-gen version, the upgrade feels like a welcome gesture to enhance the experience without overspending.

The announcement raises expectations about the future of GTA Online. It is possible that Rockstar is preparing to shut down the servers for PS4 and Xbox One, just as they did in 2021 with the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions. It would be a logical step to focus efforts on more modern platforms.

Meanwhile, the GTA community remains alert for much bigger news. Everyone is waiting for more details about Grand Theft Auto VI, the title that promises to revolutionize the saga. For now, Rockstar seems to be holding firm on the release date for November 19, after some delays.

What’s coming for the franchise

The parent company, Take-Two, confirmed that the marketing campaign for GTA VI will gain momentum this summer. This suggests that the third trailer—the first in over a year—could arrive at any moment. Fans are eager to see more of the game that is already generating huge anticipation.

This move of free updates shows that Rockstar continues to support GTA V, a title that remains a phenomenon years after its original release. The game maintains an active player base thanks to GTA Online, which continues to receive content and updates.

For many, these types of upgrades help keep interest in the franchise alive while they wait for the next big release. It may not be the bombshell announcement everyone wanted, but it is undoubtedly good news for those who want to enjoy better graphics and performance without having to buy the game again.

The technical details of the improvements include better resolution, sharper textures, and reduced loading times on next-gen consoles. On PC, ray tracing elevates visual quality to another level, making Los Santos look more realistic than ever.
