Tomas Fernández was at the center of one of the most concerning moments of the TC2000 final in Toay, La Pampa. The driver lost control of his Nissan Kicks during the early laps of the race, went off the grass, and violently crashed into a concrete wall. Despite the severity of the accident, he was able to exit the vehicle on his own.
The crash occurred after the car experienced a sharp movement when passing over a curb and veered off its trajectory. Fernández was unable to regain control, crossed the grassy area, and ended up colliding head-on with the wall, which at that point had no protective tires. As a result of the impact, the vehicle flipped and ended up on its side, suffering significant damage.
The driver was quickly assisted by medical personnel and transported by ambulance for further checks. Upon arriving at the pits, he got out of the vehicle and gave a thumbs up to reassure everyone about his condition.
While being examined, Fernández explained what had happened: "It felt like the car got whipped. It got away from me, and when I hit the grass, I went straight into the wall". He then added: "I have some pain, but nothing serious. The car got whipped when it hit the curb. And I went straight into the grass".
Later, his father reported that the driver would be taken to a clinic for tests to determine the extent of his injuries. He also noted that there was a possibility he had a fractured rib, something that needed to be confirmed through medical checks.
The accident occurred in a final that ended with a victory for Gabriel Ponce de León. The driver from Junín won after a tight finish against Franco Vivian, who crossed the finish line just 249 thousandths later. Meanwhile, Franco Morillo completed the podium.
For much of the race, Marcelo Ciarrocchi had led the competition, but was penalized with a drive-through for jumping the start. After serving the penalty, Ponce de León inherited the first position and managed to hold it until the end.
The podium was completed with Franco Morillo, while Lucas Carabajal finished fourth and Facundo Aldrighetti fifth. Emiliano Stang finished sixth after recovering from a poor start. The qualifying session also featured Matías Rossi, who suffered a engine failure on the last lap and ended up in 12th place.
Beyond the sporting result, Fernández's strong impact was the episode that garnered the most attention during the day. The possibility that the driver suffered a bone injury remained pending the medical tests following the accident.
