In the midst of its football crisis, River continues to define the future of the players who will not be considered byEduardo Coudet and Matías Galarza Fondais one of those closest to finding a new destination. The Paraguayan midfielder, who was removed from the professional squad for the second half of the year, could continue his career at Olimpia.
According to journalist Germán García Grova, the Asunción institution wants to take the midfielder on loan for 18 months, with a purchase obligation linked to the fulfillment of certain objectives. The negotiation is still not closed, although discussions have progressed and the Paraguayan team appears as the main alternative for the future of the former Talleres player.
Although River initially prioritized making definitive sales for players who were left out of the coach's consideration, due to the difficulty in finding buyers, they also began to evaluate loans that could lead to a mandatory transfer.
The possibility of moving abroad arises after a particular semester for Galarza Fonda. The midfielder returned to Núñez after his brief loan at Atlanta United, but did not manage to convince Coudet and was left out of the coach's plans.
The scenario changed after his outstanding performance with the Paraguay National Team in the 2026 World Cup, where they reached the round of 16 after eliminating Germany and then fell to France. His performance during the tournament sparked interest from some European clubs, including Bologna and Juventus from Italy, although their inquiries did not progress.
Now, Olimpia is the team that has decided to move forward concretely. The proposal for a year and a half loan with a purchase obligation could represent a solution for both the player and River, although the economic conditions and the objectives that would trigger the definitive transfer still need to be agreed upon.
In this regard, the distribution of economic rights will also be important. The Núñez club holds 70% of the midfielder's rights, while Talleres retains the remaining 30%, so any operation must consider the interests of both institutions.
Galarza Fonda could be a new reinforcement for Olimpia
Additionally, there is a particularity that could generate discussion.FIFA allows players to be registered with three clubs per season, but only authorizes them to play official matches for two. The player has already accumulated minutes with Atlanta United and was on the bench for River (he signed the sheet but did not enter the field). Because the Paraguayan league shares the same annual calendar (January to December), there is a contradiction: the strict regulation would prevent him due to his time with the Millonario, but the Paraguayan team believes there is a "legal loophole" in their favor, as the player never had real playing minutes with the Argentine team.
While the parties seek to resolve these points, Galarza Fonda awaits an exit that allows him to play regularly again. After being left out of River's plans, Olimpia appears as the most concrete destination for a midfielder who managed to increase his value with Paraguay in the World Cup and is now looking to relaunch his career.
Galarza Fonda's numbers at River
Since his arrival at the Millonario in mid-last year, and before leaving on loan to Atlanta United, the native of Asunción played only 778 minutes, spread over 14 matches, in which he did not score goals or provide assists and received 5 yellow cards.
