The increase of Moroccan immigrants settled in southern Brazil has begun to raise questions about a possible migratory impact in Argentina, especially due to the extensive land border between both countries and the recent history of foreigners from Morocco who entered irregularly from Brazilian territory.

The discussion gained momentum after Bom Dia Santa Catarina, from the Globo network, reported that 50 Moroccan citizens were assisted over the last three months by support services in Florianópolis. This figure does not by itself represent 50 illegal entries nor does it yet indicate a massive immigration, but it confirms the emergence of a flow that has begun to attract attention in the Brazilian state.

The concern did not arise solely from recent weeks. In February, the Chamber of Deputies of Brazil processed a formal request for information directed to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to learn details about the migratory flow of Moroccan citizens, including routes used, profiles, and destination cities.

The Argentine precedent that came from Brazil

In May, two Moroccan citizens aged 27 and 28 were detained in Concepción del Uruguay, Entre Ríos, after causing disturbances at the bus terminal and, according to reports, attempting to assault municipal workers.

Migrations later confirmed that neither had a legal entry into Argentine territory. Additionally, among their documents were records related to a temporary residence in Brazil and authorities detected a prior migratory alert in Santo Tomé, Corrientes. They were ultimately expelled to Brazil and received a five-year re-entry ban.

The secondary movement from Brazil to Argentina is not just a theoretical possibility, but a phenomenon that has been occurring for months. Although no significant flow of Moroccans entering the country has been detected, the situation in Brazil raises alarms once again.

What could happen in Argentina

If the flow to southern Brazil continues to grow, one of the main hypotheses is an increase in secondary movements to neighboring countries. Due to geographical location, Misiones and Corrientes appear as particularly sensitive points for those moving from the southern Brazilian states.

In that scenario, the main impact on Argentina would initially be the need to strengthen migratory controls, verify documentation issued in Brazil, and detect entries through unauthorized crossings, rather than a significant demographic pressure.

Argentina faces this scenario with a migration regime considerably stricter. The reform promoted by the Government of Javier Milei established that those who enter by evading controls can be expelled and that an expulsion not linked to crimes implies, as a general rule, a re-entry ban of at least five years.

For now, there is no data to suggest an ongoing “Moroccan wave” in Argentina. However, the growth observed in Brazil, its irresponsible border policy, and the precedent in Entre Ríos show why the evolution of the phenomenon is becoming relevant for border security in the region.
