Donald Trump confirmed this Tuesday that the United States will begin talks with Cuba amid the economic and energy collapse the island is experiencing under the communist regime.

The president made the announcement via Truth Social, where he left a strong statement about the Cuban situation: “Cuba is asking for help, and we are going to talk!”

The statements come at a critical moment for the Havana regime, which is facing massive blackouts, fuel shortages, and increasing economic pressure driven by Washington.

Trump maintains pressure on the Cuban regime

The U.S. president referred to Cuba again as “a failed country” and emphasized that the island is undergoing a deep structural crisis under decades of communist rule.

The announcement comes just days after the United States tightened sanctions against strategic sectors linked to the Cuban economic and military apparatus.

Marco Rubio announced new sanctions against Cuba

Marco Rubio recently confirmed sanctions against:

  • The military conglomerate GAESA

  • Companies linked to the regime

  • The Moa Nickel mining company

  • Officials tied to the Cuban communist apparatus

According to Rubio, the goal is to cut off the flow of money to the structures that sustain the regime.

The fuel blockade worsened the crisis in Cuba

Since the beginning of the year, Washington has maintained a strong blockade on the oil supply destined for Cuba, which has deepened the island's energy collapse.

Currently, large regions of the country are suffering electrical outages of:

  • 15 hours daily in Havana

  • More than 20 continuous hours in provinces inland

The state-owned Electric Union acknowledged that this Tuesday 61% of the country will be without electricity supply during peak demand times.

Cuba faces one of the worst crises in its recent history

The Cuban energy system is undergoing extreme deterioration.

According to official data:

  • Eight of the 16 thermoelectric plants are out of service

  • The country needs 100,000 barrels of oil daily

  • It only produces about 40,000 barrels locally

  • A large part of the generation depends on imported fuel

Independent experts estimate that Cuba would need between 8 billion and 10 billion dollars to completely rebuild its energy system.

Trump hardens his regional strategy

Blackouts are becoming increasingly widespread.
Blackouts are becoming increasingly widespread.

The offensive against Cuba is part of a broader strategy by the Trump administration to weaken allied regimes of Iran, Venezuela, and China in Latin America.

In recent weeks, the U.S. president:

  • Intensified economic sanctions

  • Expanded financial restrictions

  • Threatened to increase military pressure in the Caribbean

  • Tightened isolation on Havana's allies

Trump even publicly mentioned the possibility of deploying the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln in the region.

The Cuban regime seeks relief amid the collapse

The opening of talks with Washington reflects the level of economic deterioration that the Cuban government is experiencing.

The country faces:

  • Fuel shortages

  • Lack of food

  • Rising inflation

  • Electrical collapse

  • Record migratory exodus

  • Structural productive crisis

Meanwhile, the Trump administration maintains pressure and makes it clear that any eventual agreement will depend on deep reforms within the communist regime.
