The National Meteorological Service issued a yellow alert for extreme cold affecting sectors of the province of Buenos Aires, La Pampa, Neuquén, Mendoza, Córdoba, Tucumán, and the extreme east of Catamarca. This is a phenomenon that can pose significant health risks, especially for children, the elderly, and people with chronic illnesses.
These alerts are activated when the forecasted temperatures are well below the usual historical values for this time of year in each area. The agency also assesses how many consecutive days the event will last.
The more intense and persistent the low temperatures, the higher the alert level, which can escalate from yellow to orange or red depending on the potential impact on the population.
