The communist mayor of New York, Zohran Mamdani, starred in an awkward episode on his new weekly Twitch program after trolls invaded the official broadcast with obscene drawings and provocative messages live.
The leftist leader launched the series “Talk With The People” as an initiative to connect with new generations using digital platforms and social media. However, the premiere of the format turned into a viral embarrassment due to the lack of moderation in the live chat.
Mamdani's streaming went out of control
During the broadcast, Mamdani appeared alongside New York tiktoker Moose answering trivial questions from users about food and everyday life in New York. But quickly the chat began to fill with offensive comments and obscene images posted by anonymous users.
The trolls flooded the screen with explicit drawings of male genitalia accompanied by provocative messages like “Do you like what you see?”, while thousands of viewers watched the chaos live.
Moose himself tried to stop the situation by asking users for respect.
“Guys, to everyone spamming the chat, let’s try to keep it respectful, family-friendly,” he said during the live broadcast.
However, the messages continued to appear uncontrollably.
Mamdani wanted to compare himself to Roosevelt and LaGuardia
The broadcast had been officially presented by the New York City Hall as a modern version of Franklin D. Roosevelt's historic “Fireside Chats” and the radio program “Talk to the People” promoted by former mayor Fiorello LaGuardia in the 1940s.
“We are opening a new conversation between the government and the people,” Mamdani stated when announcing the project.

The mayor also assured that the goal was to reach especially the youth who, he claimed, “have been ignored for too long.”
The municipal administration even promoted the initiative as “the first recurring multiplatform streaming led by an elected official” in the United States.
The digital experiment ended in a wave of mockery
The lack of filters and moderation in the chat quickly turned the event into a trend on social media, where numerous users mocked the mayor's attempt to build a close image with new generations.
The episode also exposed the difficulties many political leaders face when trying to transfer traditional institutional formats to digital platforms dominated by meme culture, trolling, and viral content.
Among the notable viewers was even ultra-leftist streamer Hasan Piker, who reacted live to the chaos generated during the mayor's broadcast.
The program arrives at a complicated time for the administration
The launch of the digital series also occurred just a few days after negative data was revealed about the drop in enrollment in preschool educational programs in New York, despite the strong advertising campaign promoted by the municipal administration.
According to figures cited by U.S. media, around 64,000 residents of New York State use Twitch, the platform chosen by Mamdani for his new political communication strategy.
What was meant to be a demonstration of modernity and closeness ended up becoming a showcase of the risks of transferring institutional politics to the wilder terrain of the internet.
