The state of California, in the United States, began to lose population for the first time in years after thousands of people moved to other regions, as a result of the impact of leftist policies promoted by the Democratic government of Gavin Newsom.
According to official data from the California Department of Finance, in the last year there was a net drop of 54,000 inhabitants, bringing the total population to 39,593,000 people as of January 1.
The data not only cuts three consecutive years of recovery after the pandemic, but it also exposes a structural problem that is deepening: living in California has become increasingly difficult.

The drop, equivalent to - 0.14%, reflects a scenario where costs and fiscal pressure are pushing citizens to seek
alternatives in other states.
The phenomenon hits large urban centers the hardest. In Los Angeles, the state's most populous county, some 64,000 people left in 2025, marking the largest loss of residents in the entire region

At the city level, the population of Los Angeles fell 0.9%, while Long Beach and Anaheim also recorded declines.
Behind this exodus there is a central factor, related to the cost of living, directly linked to the economic policies of the democratic state.

Reports released by the New York Post show that those who leave California move to areas where the cost of housing is, on average, $672 lower per month. The difference is decisive for thousands of families.
“Californians are moving to more affordable locations. The average number of those leaving the state is established in neighborhoods with a significantly lower monthly housing cost,” the report explains
.
According to the data, the inhabitants of that state pay 11% more for food, 40% more for fuel and 61% more for basic services compared to the national average. This combination of high prices, high taxes and strict regulations creates an increasingly less sustainable scenario for the middle class
.
California, which for decades was synonymous with opportunities, today faces a serious population problem marked by the consequences of a political model that many residents are beginning to abandon.
