Harris questions the ''SAVE America Act'', but her criticisms overlook the documentation alternatives provided by the law to establish citizenship

The former Democratic vice president Kamala Harris launched harsh criticisms against the ''SAVE America'' law, an initiative backed by President Donald Trump and Republicans that seeks to require citizens to provide documentation to prove their U.S. citizenship when registering to vote.

Harris's statements were exposed again after Trump shared on Truth Social a video originally posted by the former vice president on X, in which she questions the new electoral requirements and warns that they could ''create obstacles'' for Americans trying to register on the electoral roll.

''They are trying to mess with your ability to vote,'' Harris stated in the video, in which she presented the legislation as part of a series of measures that, according to her argument, would hinder citizens' access to the electoral process.

The Democrat focused much of her criticism on the requirement to present documentation proving citizenship. Harris argued that voters would have to demonstrate who they are through documents such as a passport or a birth certificate.

''For people to register to vote, they are going to have to have proof of who they are,'' Harris stated, noting that many Americans do not have a passport. In her view, requiring such documents would create unnecessary obstacles for those seeking to register.

Harris also linked the debate over the ''SAVE America Act'' with a recent Supreme Court decision related to the Voting Rights Act. According to the former vice president, the ruling would have reduced protections intended to guarantee Americans' right to vote.

Her criticism of the ''SAVE America Act'' is framed within a controversial stance of the Democrats, who argue that imposing additional documentary requirements can harm citizens who do not easily possess certain official documents. From this perspective, Kamala Harris argues that the new rules could end up making access to voter registration more difficult instead of protecting it.

However, the text of the legislation includes more alternatives than those mentioned by Harris in her video. The ''SAVE America Act'' does not limit citizenship verification to passports and birth certificates. Among the documents that can be used are certain identifications that meet ''REAL ID'' requirements and certain military identification documents.

Additionally, the bill establishes a procedure for applicants who cannot present any of the specifically contemplated documents. These individuals could provide other proof of U.S. citizenship to be evaluated by election officials.

The omission of these alternatives has been used by Harris's critics to question how she presented the legislation. Her detractors argue that the leftist described the requirements in an overly restrictive manner by primarily highlighting the passport and birth certificate without mentioning the various options included in the bill.

The ''SAVE America Act'' has become one of the main points of contention between Republicans and Democrats regarding electoral matters. Its supporters believe that requiring documentary proof of citizenship is a necessary measure to ensure that only U.S. citizens can register to vote.

Opponents, including Harris, argue childishly that these requirements can become barriers for citizens who meet the criteria to vote but do not easily have the requested documentation.

Trump, by sharing Kamala Harris's video, once again placed her criticisms under the national spotlight and amplified the debate over the legislation. The president and his allies have defended the bill as a tool to reinforce security and integrity of the electoral system.
