Trump invites Canadian companies to move to the US to avoid tariffs and promises to boost investment, employment, and domestic production

President Donald Trump urged Canadian companies doing business with the United States to move their operations to U.S. territory, assuring them that if they return, they will not have to pay tariffs. The proposal is part of his strategy to attract investment, strengthen domestic production, and pressure Canada to change what he considers unfair trade practices.

In a post made on Truth Social, Trump asked Canadian companies operating in the United States to move ''immediately'' to the country. The president stated that many of those companies had previously left the United States due to what he called ''stupid'' U.S. leadership. According to Trump, returning now would have a clear advantage: they would be exempt from tariffs.

The proposal reinforces one of Trump's main economic objectives: using trade policy to encourage companies to produce within the United States instead of relying on facilities abroad. From his perspective, tariffs can serve as a negotiating tool to protect American jobs, boost domestic industry, and convince foreign companies to invest directly in the country.

The message also comes after Trump harshly criticized Canada during an interview with journalist Glenn Beck. The president described the neighboring country as ''one of the worst countries in the world'' with which the United States can negotiate and claimed that Canada has taken advantage of the United States for decades.

Trump has made the trade relationship with Canada one of the main fronts of his economic agenda. His administration argues that Canadian trade barriers have harmed American producers, particularly farmers. The president has also repeatedly questioned the trade deficit between the two countries and argued that the current situation cannot continue.

As part of that pressure, Trump announced that starting January 1, 2027, he will impose a 50% tariff on automobiles, trucks, and automotive parts coming from Canada, in addition to Canadian steel. The president justified the measure by pointing out the high tariffs Canada imposes on U.S. agricultural products.

Trump stated that these trade policies have generated a deficit of approximately $60 billion between the United States and Canada for years. For the president, this imbalance demonstrates the need to change trade rules and adopt a firmer stance toward Ottawa.

The invitation to Canadian companies represents an alternative to tariffs: instead of facing higher costs when exporting to the United States, companies can move their production to the country and benefit from direct access to the U.S. market without those burdens.

The strategy reflects Trump's vision that the United States should use its enormous domestic market as an advantage to attract capital, factories, and jobs. His message to Canadian companies is straightforward: producing within the United States means avoiding tariffs and, at the same time, being part of an economy that the president seeks to make more industrial and competitive.
