The former mayor of Arcadia, California, Eileen Wang, admitted in federal court to having acted as an illegal agent of the Chinese government in a case that reignites alarms about Beijing's attempts at political influence within the United States.
The court agreement, revealed this week in Los Angeles, details that Wang collaborated between 2020 and 2022 with officials from the People's Republic of China to spread pro-regime propaganda through a website aimed at the Chinese-American community.
According to court documents, Wang worked alongside her then-fiancé, Yaoning ''Mike'' Sun, in managing the portal ''U.S. News Center,'' publicly presented as an informational platform for Chinese immigrants in the United States. However, federal prosecutors argue that the true purpose of the site was to execute direct orders from the Chinese government and promote content designed to improve Beijing's international image.
Investigations indicate that Wang and Sun maintained constant communication with Chinese officials, who instructed them on which articles to publish and which narratives to promote. Subsequently, both sent screenshots and reports on the number of views obtained as proof of compliance with the received instructions.
Eileen Wang pleaded guilty to carrying out acts of political espionage in the United States for the regime of Xi Jinping.
One of the most delicate episodes included in the court agreement occurred when Wang was ordered to publish an essay written by Chinese officials denying international accusations of genocide and forced labor in the Xinjiang region.
The text stated that ''there is no genocide in Xinjiang'' and characterized Western allegations as attempts to ''defame China.'' According to prosecutors, Wang quickly published the content and then received congratulatory messages from her superiors.
The former official appeared on Monday before a federal court in downtown Los Angeles, where she pleaded guilty to the charge of acting as an unregistered foreign agent. U.S. legislation requires anyone working politically on behalf of a foreign government to formally report that relationship to the authorities. Wang now faces a possible sentence of up to ten years in prison.
The case has generated significant political concern as Wang was elected to the Arcadia City Council in November 2022 and subsequently held the mayoralty of the city, located in Los Angeles County. For many analysts, the episode highlights the ability of foreign governments to attempt to influence even local power structures within the United States.
Wang operated promotion sites for the Chinese regime alongside his ex-partner, "Mike" Sun, who had already been convicted of espionage.
Federal prosecutor Bill Essayli described the case as ''alarming'' and warned about the risks of foreign political infiltration. ''It should deeply concern Americans that a person linked to foreign propaganda operations has reached a public office,'' the official stated after the court hearing.
The investigation also puts back under scrutiny the Chinese government's influence operations on U.S. soil. In recent years, federal agencies have reported that Beijing seeks to expand its influence through disinformation campaigns, community organizations, media, and local political connections.
Mike Sun's name had previously appeared in federal investigations. In 2024, he was formally charged with conspiracy and acting as an illegal agent of the Chinese government. In February of this year, he was sentenced to four years in prison after prosecutors demonstrated that he was actively collaborating with Chinese officials to spread propaganda and monitor groups considered hostile by Beijing within the United States.
Several members of the judiciary in the United States warned about the risks of political infiltration in the country.
According to the Department of Justice, Sun and his Chinese contacts had plans to promote Wang's political career with the expectation that she would reach positions of greater influence within California. Authorities maintain that the ultimate goal was to favor strategic interests of the Chinese government through local political figures.
After the initial accusations against Sun in 2024, Wang attempted to publicly distance herself from her ex-partner. In statements to local media, she claimed she was not responsible for the actions of others and rejected calls for her resignation that began to arise within the community. However, the new evidence revealed by prosecutors ultimately compromised her directly in the operation.
The scandal has also raised questions about the mechanisms of political oversight in California and the ability to detect improper ties with foreign governments before involved individuals access public office. Although municipal elections in Arcadia are officially nonpartisan, the case has already begun to provoke reactions in various political sectors concerned about the growing Chinese influence in the United States.
Wang's sentencing will be determined in the coming months by the federal court in Los Angeles. Meanwhile, the case continues to be closely monitored by national security authorities and by political leaders who view the episode as a warning sign about the challenges facing American democracy in the face of foreign influence operations.
The United States Department of Justice explained that ''Mike'' Sun intended to promote Wang's political career.
