The mother of the Democratic candidate for the US Senate from the state of Michigan, Abdul El-Sayed, worked for an organization that the US Treasury sanctioned for supporting terrorism.

Fatten Fathy Elkomy, El-Sayed's biological mother, worked from 1999 until at least 2004 for the US Islamic Relief Agency, also known as the African Islamic Relief Agency, according to various sources. In October 2004, the Treasury designated the international network IARA and five of its officials as global terrorists.

This designation was due to Washington, at that time in the midst of a global war on terrorism, seeking to dismantle organizations accused of supporting Osama bin Laden and other Islamic fundamentalist networks. Thus, IARA's offices served as direct financial support for Bin Laden and worked with an institute that assisted Taliban terrorists.

In the court file, Elkomy's name appears 14 times and is connected to eight bank transfers and five recorded phone calls between 1999 and 2002, although the mother of the radical Muslim candidate was never prosecuted or charged with any crime. The case ended with IARA pleading guilty to violating US sanctions by illegally sending nearly $1.4 million to Iraq.

Elkomy defended her work at IARA and told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch that she had dedicated herself to helping orphans and children who had lost a parent. Coincidentally, El-Sayed's campaign has hardly mentioned his biological mother and has emphasized that the candidate was raised by his father —an Egyptian immigrant— and his stepmother in Michigan.

El-Sayed narrowly defeated moderate Congresswoman Haley Stevens in the Democratic primary on August 4 and is seeking to occupy the seat being vacated by Democratic Senator Gary Peters, who is retiring. He will face Trump's candidate, former FBI agent and former Congressman Mike Rogers, in November.
