According to a series of new data revealed by the FBI, violent crimes decreased across the United States in 2025 at rates not seen in the last 90 years.
The annual preliminary crime report shows that last year homicides and negligent manslaughter plummeted by more than 18% nationwide, while aggravated assaults fell by more than 7%. Overall, violent crimes decreased by approximately 9.3% in 2025.
"The 2025 crime data in this report shows the largest individual decrease in violent crimes and homicides since 1937, as well as huge widespread declines in terms of aggravated assault, rape, and robbery," was the conclusion reached by Trump's FBI director, Kash Patel, in a statement released on Tuesday.
"Over the past 14 months, we have made profound transformations in the FBI, and these results demonstrate that those changes are working," the official added.

The number of incidents remains concerning despite the good results
Thefts dropped by nearly 18.5%, as did property crimes, which recorded a decrease of 12.4% compared to 2024 statistics. In total, approximately 1.1 million fewer violent crimes were committed this year compared to previous years and an even more pronounced year-on-year decrease of about 5.2 million fewer property crimes.
However, despite many crimes showing a downward trend, the police report reveals that the total number of incidents remains alarming, as at the current rate indicated by the statistics, a violent crime occurs every 28 seconds, a homicide every 37 minutes, and a rape every 4 minutes.
The personal cost for law enforcement was also high: about 53 police officers died in the line of duty last year. Additionally, more than 90,000 were assaulted while on duty and another 28 died accidentally while working.
The complete report is expected to be published at the end of the year.
