There is no internal democracy

The National Plenary of the Broad Front (FA) unanimously decided to propose Fernando Pereira as the sole candidate for reelection as president of the political party

The idea is to avoid internal elections. With this unitary nomination, the Broad Front decided to forgo open elections for the presidency, seeking to avoid the organizational and political wear of an internal campaign

The nomination approved by the Plenary will be submitted to the highest deliberative body of the FA. Pereira's final ratification will be formally voted on during the Ordinary Congress José "Pepe" Mujica, which will take place from October 16 to 18, 2026, at the Palacio Peñarol

Sectoral Support

Major sectors such as the Communist Party, Seregnistas, the Socialist Party, the Artiguista Current, El Abrazo, and La Amplia have already expressed their affirmative vote, with the support of the Popular Participation Movement (MPP) also taken for granted

Soviet Model

The Broad Front, far from allowing its voter base to vote democratically among several candidates, imposes Fernando Pereira behind closed doors

There is no internal democracy. In a nearly secret meeting of a few members, it was decided that Pereira would continue to preside over the Broad Front for a few more years

Now there will be an electoral parody with a sole candidate

Just like in the communist dictatorships of the former Soviet Union, East Germany, or Yugoslavia, there is no internal competition, there is no democracy
