There were almost 200 homicides between January and June

Uruguay recorded 195 homicides between January and June 2026, according to the Semiannual Bulletin of Criminal Statistics presented by the Ministry of the Interior.

This key indicator reveals the security landscape in the country. This figure represents a 6.6% increase compared to the same period in 2025, when 183 murders were counted.

The rise in cases was primarily concentrated in the second quarter of the year (April, May, and June). The epicenter of the crimes occurred in the departments of Montevideo (114 cases) and Canelones (30 cases).

This is the highest number of homicides recorded in the first half of the year in the country since the historical peak in 2018 (when 224 occurred).

Bloodbath

The number of homicides in the first half of 2026 is extremely high for a country with a population of nearly 3,500,000 inhabitants.

It reflects the enormous violence that is divided within society, and the governmental inaction to combat crime.

The government led by Yamandú Orsi, and the Ministry of the Interior headed by Carlos Negro, are not providing solutions. Uruguayans are living increasingly insecure lives, and homicides are a daily occurrence without public authorities providing answers to the population.

Insecurity affects the entire country. In Montevideo, while homicides are concentrated in the peripheral neighborhoods, there is no place where one can live in peace.
