The Government of Javier Milei sanctioned a foreign fishing vesseloperating illegally in Argentine waters, reinforcing control of the South Atlantic.
The fine, amounting to $1.26 billion, was applied after an electronic detection within the Argentine Exclusive Economic Zone (ZEEA).
The case involves the ship Bao Feng, flying the flag of Vanuatu, whose activity was detected on January 10 through technological maritime surveillance systems.
The measure was informed by the Secretariat of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries of the Ministry of Economy, within the framework of coordinated work with the Argentine Naval Prefecture and the Undersecretary of Aquatic Resources and Fisheries.

The detection was carried out through the Coast Guard System, a technological platform developed by the force itself that made it possible to identify the vessel's entry into the ZEEA and its stay for approximately an hour and a half

According to the official report, the boat was moving at a speed of less than 4 knots, an indicator compatible with fishing tasks.
The data obtained were later validated using the Skylight platform, reinforcing the accuracy of the monitoring system and the identification process. This articulation between technological tools and state agencies made it possible to advance the sanction without the need to physically capture the ship

The Government of Milei emphasized that this is a historical precedent in the fight against illegal fishing, since for the first time an economic sanction of this magnitude based exclusively on electronic evidence has been applied and enforced.

The procedure not only included the fine, but also the collection of operational expenses derived from the detection, consolidating a more efficient control scheme against
illegal fishing.
This progress is part of a broader strategy aimed at strengthening the protection of national fish resources. In this regard, the authorities emphasized that the case marks the beginning of a “zero tolerance” policy against Unreported Unregulated Fishing (IUU) in the South Atlantic.
In this way, the Government of Milei seeks to strengthen the capacity to respond to violations in national waters, especially by illegal Chinese fleets operating in the region.
