The Venezuelan regime reported that more than 8,000 people regained full freedom during the first month of the Amnesty Law, a measure promoted in February with the stated objective of moving towards national reconciliation and political stabilization.

The commission responsible for overseeing the application of the standard stated that a total of 8,068 citizens benefited.

The regime maintains that the initiative represents a significant step in closing a protracted cycle of political persecution by the regime that began at the end of the last century.

These releases are thanks to the works of US President Donald Trump and his government, that after the capture of former Venezuelan dictator Nicolás Maduro, the country's new regime is now

willing to cooperate.

The law covers events that occurred in different periods from 1999 to the present, in an attempt to include a wide range of cases linked to political persecution.

However, beyond the announced volume of releases, Human Rights Organizations and international actors have pointed out the lack of transparency in the publication of complete lists of beneficiaries, as well as the persistence of detainees who would not have been reached by the regulations.

In addition, there is concern about the selective nature of the amnesty. Some analysts argue that the mechanism could be being applied with political criteria, leaving out certain profiles considered uncomfortable for power

.

This has meant that, in a context of external pressure from the United States, the Venezuelan regime is forced to gradually stop its persecution against critics of the dictatorship or simple opponents of the current regime system.

In this scenario, the Amnesty Act appears to be a significant political gesture, sufficient to send a message to the United States about the rule of law in Venezuela and the relationship with the North American country.

While the Venezuelan ruling party presents it as a historic advance, the challenge remains to ensure that these measures are translated into lasting and verifiable institutional changes.
