River Plate was the only club that rejected the new format of First Division tournaments that will be implemented starting in 2027. After the vote in the Executive Committee of the AFA, the president of the “Millionaire”, Stefano Di Carlo, explained the reasons for the institutional position and questioned that the proposed changes do not solve the structural problems of Argentine football
.River rejected the AFA project for 2027. The
proposal received the necessary support to move forward, but River decided to express his disagreement. Estudiantes de La Plata, another institution faced with the leadership of the AFA, was unable to vote, so the “Millionaire” was the only club that left its opposition established.
After the meeting, Di Carlo defended the decision and considered that the proposed changes represent a limited improvement. “What we did was express that we did not support the project, because it is a change that is cosmetic. It generates a slight improvement, which in fact is incredible because it hasn't been the case for three years, but that beyond that it doesn't solve the underlying problem,” he explained to the press.
Di Carlo denied versions about the relegations The president of River also came to the crossroads of the versions that linked the club to a proposal for ten direct descents
. As he clarified, this alternative was not promoted by the Núñez institution.
“Nor has it been raised on River's side about the 10 direct descents and everything that was said. Obviously we have to build a path together with Students, we presented a document to do something gradual, to go to a more normal format,” he said.
In this way, Di Carlo remarked that River seeks to move towards a progressive modification of the competition system, instead of applying changes that he considers insufficient to resolve current difficulties.
