The British Government has decided to reinforce and modernize its military capability in the Falkland Islands by replacing the fighter jets currently part of the air defense system deployed in the archipelago. The measure includes the substitution of the four Eurofighter Typhoon currently provided by Squadron 1435 with another four aircraft belonging to a more advanced version.

The change will take place during the scheduled rotation between late November and early December 2027, with aircraft coming from the existing fleet of the Royal Air Force. In this way, London will maintain its air response capability in the islands under British administration.

Since 2009, the Eurofighter Typhoon FGR4 from 1435 Flight has been the main component of British air defense in the Falkland Islands. The four fighter jets are permanently deployed at RAF Mount Pleasant, from where they can respond quickly to any potential threat.

The British Ministry of Defence has decided that the current aircraft, corresponding to the first phase of the program, will be replaced by four second-phase Typhoon from the Royal Air Force fleet.

The renewal will allow the islands to maintain aircraft belonging to a more advanced generation of the same combat system, without changing the number of deployed fighters.

A force ready to respond in a few minutes

The Typhoon remain on alert at RAF Mount Pleasant and are prepared to take off in a few minutes in the face of any potential air threat.

The Eurofighter Typhoon is a twin-engine multirole fighter developed by a European consortium made up of companies from different countries. It is characterized by its high maneuverability and ability to perform different types of missions, including air defense and combat operations.

The British deployment in the islands is supported by a military structure that does not rely exclusively on the fighters. The presence of the Typhoon is accompanied by aircraft designated for transport and logistical support of operations.

The airbase also has an Airbus A400M Atlas, used for transport missions, and an Airbus Voyager, which allows for in-flight refueling tasks.

This infrastructure enables London to maintain a permanent military presence and sustain the operational capability of its fighters thousands of kilometers from British mainland territory.

With the planned replacement for 2027, the United Kingdom seeks to ensure the continuity of its air defense system in the Falklands and maintain there aircraft of a more modern version of the Eurofighter Typhoon.

The move comes in a territory whose sovereignty is claimed by Argentina, which maintains its claim over the Falkland Islands, South Georgia, South Sandwich Islands, and the surrounding maritime areas. Meanwhile, London maintains effective control of the archipelago and continues to reinforce its defensive capabilities.
