Google accelerates the browser release cycle to close vulnerabilities faster and compete with new AI-driven alternatives

Google confirmed the official change in the update rhythm of Chrome. Starting with the release of version 153, available this Tuesday on desktop, iOS, and Android, the browser shifts from a four-week cycle to just two. The decision responds to the pressure that artificial intelligence exerts on the security landscape.

The company explained that automated tools based on AI and the increase in bug reports from the community have raised the volume of necessary patches. A shorter schedule allows for better management of these corrections and reduces the window between the moment a vulnerability is known and its arrival to end users.

This interval, known as the “N-day” patch gap, becomes critical in the face of threats that also evolve more quickly thanks to AI. Shortening the delivery time of fixes is now a strategic priority to maintain the protection of hundreds of millions of people who use Chrome daily.

The new rhythm not only focuses on security. It also facilitates the more agile delivery of new features, a key point at a time when AI-assisted development has spurred the emergence of several competing browsers.

Competition and AI Experimentation

Although the OpenAI project called ChatGPT Atlas has already been discontinued, other rivals are still active and seeking to gain ground against Chrome. Among them are Brave, Dia, Opera Neon, Comet by Perplexity, and the DuckDuckGo browser, along with other emerging proposals.

At the same time, Google is experimenting with incorporating more artificial intelligence capabilities within Chrome and needs to iterate quickly on these innovations. A two-week cycle adapts better to this constant testing and adjustment dynamic.

The change also impacts the web ecosystem in general. Since Chrome holds the largest market share globally, its decision often sets the standard for the rest of the industry. Mozilla, Microsoft, and Brave have already begun adopting similar two-week schedules following Google's example.

This is not the first time the browser has adjusted its release frequency. In 2021, it shifted from six to four weeks, after having consolidated the principle of “release early and often” for over a decade. Now, with AI transforming both threats and development possibilities, the move to two weeks aims to keep Chrome in line with a much more dynamic environment.

The company claims that this acceleration benefits users by providing more timely security patches and, at the same time, allows new features to arrive sooner. In a scenario where threats and competition advance at greater speed, reducing wait times has become essential.
