Just over 10 days before the return of Formula 1 after the summer break, Cadillac made an unexpected decision: they fired Graeme Lowdon as their team director. His position will be immediately filled by Marcin Budkowski, who will take over the leadership of the American team before the Dutch Grand Prix, which will take place next week.

While the change was presented as a planned transition between the construction phase and a new performance-focused phase, it was later confirmed that Lowdon's departure "was not a mutual decision" and, furthermore, the now former team principal was not informed until the very morning his departure was announced.

The situation generated even more surprise because Lowdon had been at the helm of the project since its inception and during the early races of the season, accompanying Cadillac's entry into the top category. In fact, just a day before his dismissal, he had publicly spoken about the challenges of building a competitive structure from scratch. "I think it actually takes years", he had stated.

Now, the responsibility will fall on Budkowski, a 49-year-old engineer with over two decades of experience in Formula 1. Throughout his career, he worked at Prost, Ferrari, McLaren, and the FIA, in addition to holding various technical and managerial positions at Renault, and later at Alpine.

The leadership change occurs in a complicated sporting context. Cadillac, with Sergio Checo Pérez and Valtteri Bottas as the main drivers, has yet to score points in their first 11 GPs, although in different races they managed to finish ahead of Aston Martin, their main rival in the lower part of the constructors' standings.

In this regard, Budkowski explained what his priorities will be upon taking office and specifically pointed to improving internal processes. "My focus will be on aligning our personnel, tools, and information flow so that the right decisions are made quickly and the performance of the car improves every time we go out to compete", he stated.

"This is a phase of enormous opportunities for the team, defined by a clear goal: maximize the development of the car within the budget limit and get every area of the organization working to compete", he added.

From Cadillac, Dan Towriss justified the arrival of the new leader and highlighted his experience. "The appointment of Marcin marks another important step in the ongoing evolution of the Cadillac Formula 1 team", expressed the CEO, who emphasized that the team's intention is to build a structure capable of competing at the front of the category.

Towriss also had words of recognition for Lowdon, although without publicly referencing the circumstances of his dismissal: "We are grateful to Graeme Lowdon for his leadership and the role he played in forming the Cadillac Formula 1 team from its foundations. His contributions helped establish a solid foundation in our construction phase; we thank him for his commitment and wish him the best".

Thus, Cadillac will face the return of Formula 1 with an abrupt change in its leadership. Budkowski will have the mission of leading the transition to a stage in which the team must begin to transform its structure and resources into results.
