An image circulated on social media shows Pedro Sánchez next to an imam in a mosque in Marrakech and raises new questions

A photograph circulated on social media has once again sparked controversy around the Spanish Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez. The image, published this Wednesday by user Vito Quiles, shows a man identified as Sánchez alongside a man in religious attire inside what appears to be a mosque in Marrakech, Morocco.

The post raises a particularly sensitive question: what relationship exists between Sánchez's presence in that place and his political ties with Morocco.

The image was accompanied by the message: “A photo of Pedro Sánchez appears in a mosque in Marrakech alongside an imam and possible Moroccan agent. What does the president owe to Mohamed VI?” The post quickly generated a response on social media.

A photograph that raises new questions about Sánchez

The photograph, by itself, does not allow us to establish when it was taken, who all the people in it are, or what the exact context of the meeting was. It also does not prove that the person accompanying the Spanish leader is a Moroccan agent, something that was suggested as a possibility in the original post and would require additional evidence.

However, the emergence of the image is politically striking due to the close relationship Sánchez has developed with Morocco over the past few years.

The link between the two countries gained particular relevance after the shift in Spanish policy regarding the Western Sahara conflict. In 2022, Sánchez's government publicly backed Morocco's proposal for autonomy for the territory, a decision that provoked strong criticism both within Spain and among sectors linked to the Polisario Front.

Since then, Morocco has become one of the most important strategic partners for Sánchez's government on issues such as immigration, security, trade, and bilateral cooperation.

The link with Mohamed VI, once again at the center of the debate

The reference to King Mohamed VI in the post also points to a deeper political issue. The relationship between Sánchez and the Moroccan monarchy has been a recurring topic of debate in Spain, especially due to the change in position regarding Western Sahara and the importance Madrid places on Rabat in migration matters.

For his critics, the rapprochement with Morocco represents a concession of Spanish positions on strategic issues. For the government, however, bilateral cooperation is essential to protect Spanish interests and maintain a stable relationship with a country considered key to the security of southern Europe.

The new photograph now fuels the criticism of those who question Sánchez's foreign policy and his relationship with the Moroccan regime.

Beyond political interpretations, any conclusion about the identity of the person appearing alongside the president, the timing of the photograph, or the reason for his presence in the mosque must be supported by additional and verifiable information.

What is beyond dispute is that the image has already opened a new front of debate regarding Pedro Sánchez, Morocco, and the foreign policy decisions of the Spanish government.
