The mayor of Avellaneda, Jorge Ferraresi, resigned from his position and delegated the leadership of the municipality to his wife and Chief of Staff, Magdalena Sierra, who formally took charge of the local Executive.

The decision comes in a context marked by the growing political projection of the Kirchnerist leader towards the province of Buenos Aires, where his name is beginning to be established as a possible gubernatorial candidate in 2027.

Ferraresi's move occurs alongside the constitutional impossibility of reelection for the current governor, Axel Kicillof, which opens the internal dispute within Peronism for succession. In this scenario, the former mayor seeks to position himself within the political framework of the provincial government.

From the municipal environment, it was Sierra herself who confirmed the leave of absence and announced her assumption. In a message, she stated: “It is an honor to continue the path that Jorge Ferraresi started. With enormous dedication, he profoundly transformed our city and turned it into a model of management. My commitment is to take care of everything we built together and continue working, every day, so that Avellaneda keeps growing.”

Ferraresi has been part of the Movement Right to the Future (MDF) since its inception, the political space aligned with the so-called “axelism,” which maintains tensions with sectors linked to La Cámpora and the more hardline Kirchnerism.

Although for years he was one of the most trusted leaders of the corrupt and convicted Cristina Fernández de Kirchner, recently he distanced himself amid disputes over territorial organization and leadership of the space.

In April, the leader himself left the door open for a potential candidacy: “There is a possibility,” he stated, while emphasizing the intention of various leaders to advance in a collective project for the province.

His possible nomination gained momentum after receiving the support of the Minister of Community Development of Buenos Aires, Andrés Larroque, one of Kicillof's main political allies.

With this leave of absence, Ferraresi steps away from the management of Avellaneda to focus on the political construction of the MDF, with an agenda centered on territorial tours and meetings with mayors and Peronist leaders.

However, the path to 2027 appears competitive within the PJ. Among the possible precandidates for the governorship are also the Kirchnerists Gabriel Katopodis, Mayra Mendoza, Federico Achával, and Julio Alak. Meanwhile, the only leader who has explicitly confirmed her intention to compete is Mariel Fernández.
