Lindsay Clancy is accused of strangling her three young children in the family home in Massachusetts

The trial against Lindsay Clancy, the 36-year-old woman accused of killing her three young children in Duxbury, Massachusetts, United States, has reached a decisive stage. On Wednesday, August 26, the presentation of testimonies concluded, and the case is now moving toward closing arguments and subsequent jury deliberation.

Clancy is accused of having strangled Cora, 5 years old; Dawson, 3; and Callan, just 8 months, on January 24, 2023. The woman pleaded not guilty by reason of mental incapacity, and her defense argues that, at the time of the events, she was experiencing postpartum psychosis that would have affected her ability to understand and control her actions.

The prosecution presents a different hypothesis: it claims that the woman planned the murders, maintained control over her actions, and understood that what she was doing was wrong.

At the center of this discussion was one of the explanations provided by Clancy regarding what happened. She stated that a voice in her head allegedly ordered her to kill her children. However, forensic psychiatrist Gregory Saathoff from the University of Virginia and senior psychiatrist at the FBI's Behavioral Analysis Unit questioned this account during his testimony as a rebuttal witness for the prosecution.

During his presentation, Saathoff focused on reconstructing what specific instructions Clancy would have received from the supposed voice she described.

Prosecutor Jennifer Sprague asked the specialist if, according to the accused's account, that voice had indicated where she should kill the children, how she should do it, what she should use, or in what order to act. The answer was negative in all cases.

For the specialist, the absence of specific instructions contrasted with the number of decisions Clancy would have made during the time she was alone with her children.

He killed his three children, he said that "voices" ordered him to do it and a psychiatrist ruled out psychosis: "I've never seen anything like this"

“The fact that there were no instructions on how to do it, yet she was able to execute those decisions... it is surprising that she was able to accomplish all this without any other type of direction or plan,” Saathoff stated.

According to the reconstruction of the case, the three children were strangled with rubber bands in the basement of the home. Subsequently, Clancy attempted to take her own life.

Her then-husband and the father of the children, Patrick Clancy, was outside the house at that time. He had gone out to get food and stop by a pharmacy before returning home.

The ability to carry out different actions during that period was one of the elements analyzed by Saathoff. For the psychiatrist, the sequence would indicate that Clancy “had control, control over the sequence of what she was doing at all times”.

The specialist also stated that the time available while her husband was out of the house would have been relevant for carrying out both the homicides and her subsequent suicide attempt.

The supposed voice disappeared after the crimes

However, there was another element that particularly caught Saathoff's attention and became one of the most controversial points of his testimony.

According to Clancy's account, the voice she supposedly heard disappeared immediately after she finished strangling her three children.

The psychiatrist considered this behavior unusual. As he explained to the court, committing the act that allegedly indicated an auditory hallucination does not necessarily mean that it disappears automatically.

“Committing that act does not cure the voice,” he stated, referring to the sudden interruption described by the accused.

He then added a phrase that marked his testimony: “I have never seen anything like this.”
