Milei defended sovereignty over the Malvinas on French television: “They are Argentine by history and by right”

President Javier Milei reaffirmed the claim of Argentine sovereignty over the Falkland Islands during an interview granted to French television and assured that his Government is working on a state policy aimed at recovering the archipelago through diplomatic means.

In a conversation with LCI, a channel belonging to the TF1 group, the president stated that Argentina's rights over the Islands are supported by historical and legal arguments. The interview was conducted from Buenos Aires ahead of the upcoming presidential visit to France. “The Falklands are Argentine. Because of history, because of law, and it is perfectly documented”, Milei affirmed when referring to the sovereignty claim with the United Kingdom.

The President also referred to the composition of the population of the archipelago after the British occupation and stated that the inhabitants who were there were displaced and subsequently replaced. “They expelled the population of the Falklands and implanted a new population. The original population was expelled and new inhabitants were placed,” he argued.

During the interview, Milei considered that the current political, economic, and demographic situation in the United Kingdom should lead London to reconsider its position regarding the archipelago. “Clearly, they should seriously reconsider returning the islands to us peacefully, because it is Argentine territory”, he assured.

The president thus placed the claim back within a diplomatic strategy and explicitly ruled out any military alternative. “No war. We are not talking about war at all”, he noted while explaining his administration's position.

In this regard, he stated that the Government seeks to turn the Falklands issue into a sustained long-term strategy. “We are working on a state policy regarding the Falklands and we seek to recover them through diplomatic means. That is the policy of our Government”, he explained.

The alliance with the United States and the international scenario

Milei also linked the Argentine diplomatic strategy with the strengthening of the country's international relations, particularly with the United States, one of the main allies of his administration.

During the same interview, the President praised Donald Trump and defended his role in international politics. He also questioned the European economic and political direction, considering that the continent faces issues related to overregulation, the size of the State, immigration, and its demographic situation. TF1 highlighted these statements as one of the main axes of the conversation.

Regarding the Falklands, however, Milei reiterated that the Argentine objective will be driven exclusively through diplomacy and the strengthening of the country's international position.
