The English football transfer market could see one of its major moves if the departure of Rodri from Manchester City is finally confirmed. The Spaniard is being closely followed by Barcelona and Real Madrid, and with the possibility of losing one of their key players, the citizen team has already begun to analyze alternatives for the midfield, among which Enzo Fernández appears.

According to The Athletic, the Manchester club has already explored the possibility of signing the Argentine midfielder due to the uncertainty surrounding the Spaniard, whose contract expires in 2027. If Rodri ultimately leaves the Etihad Stadium, the citizens believe they will need to undertake a significant overhaul in that area of the field.

In this regard, the former River player is seen as a particularly attractive option for Maresca, who coached him during his time at Chelsea and knows his characteristics well. The Italian coach, who took over at City after Pep Guardiola's departure, considers him a player capable of performing in various midfield positions, both as a defensive midfielder and as an interior or even a few meters further up the pitch.

The operation, however, would be far from straightforward. Chelsea considers the world champion, who has a contract until 2032, to be a key piece of their project and, according to The Athletic, would only be willing to consider a transfer for a figure close to 120 million pounds, around 140 million euros.

At Stamford Bridge, there are also indications that the current intention is for the Argentine national team midfielder to remain in London. The midfielder even showed up on Monday at the training center despite his first practice after the holidays being scheduled for this Wednesday, a sign that the club interprets as favorable for his stay.

For now, the Argentine remains tied to the London club and all indications are that his future will largely depend on how Rodri's situation is resolved. If the Spaniard leaves and City decides to go all out for Fernández, one of the major operations in the European market could open up.

Enzo Fernández's numbers at Chelsea

Since his arrival at the London club in early 2023, the native of San Martín has played 13,375 minutes, spread over 169 matches, in which he scored 31 goals, provided 30 assists, and received 37 yellow cards. In terms of titles, he has won 2: the 2024/25 Conference League and the 2025 Club World Cup.
