After overcoming a herniated disc, the Uruguayan forward trained normally and would seek to be an option in the next match for Xeneize in the Copa Libertadores.
Several months after his last match, Edinson Cavani is in the final stage of his recovery and at Boca expectations are rising for his possible return in a decisive match: the clash against Cruzeiro in the Copa Libertadores at La Bombonera. The Uruguayan forward has already received medical clearance and has returned to training normally with the rest of the squad, which puts him back on the radar of the coaching staff led by Claudio Úbeda.
In recent practices, the 39-year-old attacker participated in intense drills in small spaces and completed finishing exercises without showing any discomfort, a significant advancement after a long period of inactivity. In fact, after the practice following the elimination from the 2026 Apertura Tournament against Huracán, Cavani added more minutes of football and reaffirmed his intention to be available as soon as possible.
Cavani was able to complete training alongside the rest of the squad.
His recovery has not been easy. Since February, when he played his second and last match of the season against Racing, the forward has been sidelined due to a herniated disc that forced him to undergo a specific treatment with lumbar blocks.
Now, despite having medical clearance, the coaching staff remains cautious. While they consider it difficult for him to be at full capacity for the match on TuesdayMay 19, they have not ruled him out, especially given the recent absence of Adam Bareiro which forces a reorganization of the xeneize attack and its alternatives on the bench.
The match against Cruzeiro will be crucial for Boca's aspirations in the Copa Libertadores, as they need to secure three points to maintain chances of advancing to the round of 16. In this context, Cavani's possible appearance not only represents a footballing option but also a morale boost for a team that arrives bruised after the recent local elimination.
